What is assembly grease?
Assembly grease is a specialized lubricant applied during the manufacturing or rebuilding process of mechanical components. It provides initial lubrication to prevent dry starts, holds small parts (like needle bearings) in place, and protects surfaces from scoring, galling, and corrosion before the main system lubrication takes over.
Assembly grease vs anti-seize?
While both are used during assembly, they serve different primary functions. Anti-seize pastes contain high amounts of solid lubricants (like copper, nickel, or graphite) specifically designed to prevent threaded fasteners from galling and seizing under high heat or pressure. Assembly grease is generally used for moving parts (bearings, cams, O-rings) to provide initial hydrodynamic or boundary lubrication and is often designed to dissolve into the system's main oil.
Assembly grease vs bearing grease?
Standard bearing grease is formulated for long-term operation under continuous speed and load. Assembly grease for engine bearings, for example, is highly tacky to stay in place during storage and is explicitly formulated to dissolve rapidly and safely into engine oil once the engine starts, preventing filter clogging.
Can assembly grease be used on plastic?
It depends on the formula. Mineral oil-based greases can cause certain plastics (like ABS or Polycarbonate) to crack or swell. For plastic components, we recommend synthetic hydrocarbon (PAO) or silicone-based assembly greases. Always request compatibility testing for your specific plastic type.
Can assembly grease protect O-rings?
Yes, silicone assembly grease or specific ester-based formulas are excellent for O-rings. They reduce friction during insertion, preventing the rubber from tearing or rolling, and help condition the seal. However, you must ensure the grease base oil is compatible with the O-ring elastomer (e.g., do not use silicone grease on silicone O-rings).
