Note: Anti seize compound is an assembly paste, not a general-purpose bearing grease. It should not be used in high-speed bearings, gearboxes or friction surfaces unless the equipment manufacturer specifies it.

What Is Anti-Seize Lubricant?

Anti-seize lubricant is a paste-like assembly compound applied to threaded fasteners and metal contact surfaces, its core function is NOT "lubrication to reduce friction", but rather to create a physical barrier that to help prevent galling, seizing, rust and corrosion.

Unlike ordinary grease, anti-seize grease usually contains solid lubricating particles such as copper, nickel, graphite, aluminum, ceramic or other fillers that remain protective under high pressure and high temperature conditions.

Why Do Fasteners Require Anti-Seize?

During equipment maintenance and teardowns, while most connections disassemble smoothly, inevitably some bolts jam, nuts refuse to turn, bearings gall onto shafts, or gaskets weld to flanges. Repairing these seized components is incredibly labor-intensive, time-consuming, and often results in destroyed parts that must be replaced, driving up operational costs.

Fully tightened threaded fasteners endure immense loads. While metal surfaces appear smooth to the naked eye, microscopically they consist of peaks and valleys. Under tightening torque, these rough asperities contact, deform, and essentially "cold weld" together. Over time, exposure to high temperatures, vibration, impact, and chemical attack further fuses the threads into a permanent bond.

Choose copper anti-seize for general high-temperature automotive and repair applications. Choose nickel anti-seize when copper contamination must be avoided or when stainless steel, titanium or high-temperature industrial fasteners are involved. Choose metal-free or ceramic anti-seize when both copper and nickel are not preferred or when marine, humidity or contamination concerns matter.

High-Temperature Torque Test

The anti-seize compound is applied to standardized threaded fasteners and placed in a high-temperature environmental chamber ranging from 200°C to 650°C. 

After a sustained period (typically 100 hours), the bolts are extracted to verify if the disassembly torque remains stable and within specified limits, proving the compound's resistance to thermal degradation and sintering.

Extreme Pressure (EP) Test

Utilizing the Four-Ball Wear Test methodology, the grease is loaded into a cup. A rotating steel ball presses against three stationary balls under specific loads and RPMs. 

By measuring the resulting wear scar diameter, we determine the EP performance. This ensures the paste can withstand the immense pressure of bolt assembly without the protective film rupturing, preventing galling.

How to Apply Anti-Seize Lubricant

Clean the Surface

Remove dirt, old grease, oil, rust or contamination from the thread or metal contact area before application.

Apply a Thin Film

Apply anti-seize to the male thread or contact surface. For threaded fasteners, work the paste into the thread roots.

Assemble the Parts

Tighten according to the equipment instruction. Review torque values if the specification is based on dry threads.

Wipe Away Excess

Remove excess paste to avoid contamination, mess or transfer to nearby surfaces.

Warning:

Do not overapply. Do not use anti-seize on brake pad friction material, rotor friction surfaces, high-speed bearings or gearboxes. Always follow OEM instructions for critical fasteners.

When Not to Use Anti-Seize Lubricant

Not for High-Speed Bearings

What is anti-seize lubricant?

It is commonly used on bolts, nuts, spark plugs, exhaust fasteners, wheel hubs, valves and industrial assemblies that may need future disassembly.
Is anti-seize the same as grease?
No. Anti-seize is mainly used for assembly and future disassembly of threaded or mated metal parts. Grease is mainly used to lubricate moving parts. Anti-seize often contains solid lubricants such as copper, nickel, graphite, aluminum or ceramic materials that continue to protect under high temperature and pressure.
What is copper anti-seize used for?
Copper anti-seize is commonly used on high-temperature automotive and industrial threaded parts such as exhaust bolts, spark plugs, oxygen sensors, engine bolts, pipe fittings and battery terminals. It should not be used where copper contamination or material restrictions apply.
When should I use nickel anti-seize?
Nickel anti-seize is often selected for stainless steel, titanium, nickel alloys, high-temperature industrial fasteners and applications where copper must be avoided. It is also useful in chemical, exhaust and severe-duty environments after application review.
What is metal-free anti-seize?
Metal-free anti-seize is a copper-free and nickel-free anti-seize formulation that may use graphite, ceramic, calcium fluoride or other non-metallic solids. It is selected when metal contamination, galvanic concerns, marine exposure or copper/nickel restrictions are important.
Can anti-seize be used on brake parts?
Anti-seize can be used only on selected non-friction contact areas when specified, such as certain wheel hub or hardware contact points. It must never be applied to brake pad friction material or rotor friction surfaces. For caliper pins and brake pad contact points, use the correct brake grease instead.
Does anti-seize affect torque?
Yes. Anti-seize reduces thread friction and can change the relationship between torque and clamp load. For critical fasteners, the torque value should follow the equipment manufacturer or engineering instruction, and torque adjustment may be required.
