Why Standard Grease Fails at High Temperatures

Operating industrial equipment beyond 120°C exposes standard lithium greases to rapid degradation. Understanding these failure modes is critical for preventing unbudgeted downtime.

Burned bearing vs properly lubricated bearing

Catastrophic Bearing Failure due to Carbonization

Grease Hardening

Base oil evaporation leaves behind thickener residue, causing extreme friction and motor overload.

Oil Separation (Bleed)

Thermal stress breaks down the thickener matrix, causing the oil to leak out of the bearing housing.

Rapid Oxidation

Oxygen reactivity accelerates at high heat, turning grease into acidic sludge that pits metal surfaces.

Increased Maintenance Costs

Shortened relubrication intervals demand excessive labor and higher lubricant consumption.

What Is High Temperature Grease?

High temperature grease is a specialty lubricant engineered to maintain its protective film and structural integrity in environments where conventional mineral-oil-based greases oxidize, evaporate, or melt.

The Anatomy of Extreme Heat Lubrication

  • Base Oil (70-90%)

We utilize synthetic fluids (PAO, Esters, Silicone, or PFPE) that offer high flash points and low volatility compared to mineral oils.

  • Thickener System (10-20%)

The "sponge" holding the oil. We formulate with Lithium Complex, Polyurea, PTFE, or Inorganic clays (Bentonite) to resist melting up to 300°C.

  • Performance Additives (1-10%)

Antioxidants, anti-wear (AW), and extreme pressure (EP) agents specifically selected to remain stable at high temperatures.

How to Select the Correct High Temperature Grease

1

Step 1: Determine Operating Temperature

Identify continuous vs. peak intermittent temperatures. Above 200°C requires specialized synthetic base oils.

2

Step 2: Evaluate Speed and Load

High-speed bearings need lower base oil viscosity. Heavy loads require Extreme Pressure (EP) additives.

3

Step 3: Check Water Exposure

If washout is a risk, complex thickeners or specific polymers are necessary to maintain adhesion.

4

Step 4: Chemical Exposure

Presence of solvents, acids, or oxygen necessitates chemically inert formulations like PFPE.

5

Step 5: Material Compatibility

Ensure the grease does not swell or shrink plastic gears or elastomer seals (e.g., EPDM, NBR).

6

Step 6: Choose Technology

Match the findings to the appropriate thickener/oil combination.

Frequently Asked Questions

What temperature is considered high temperature for grease?
In industrial lubrication, continuous operating temperatures above 120°C (250°F) are generally considered high temperature. Standard lithium multipurpose greases begin to degrade rapidly above this point, requiring specialized complex thickeners or synthetic base oils.
What is the best grease for bearings operating above 200°C?
For continuous operation above 200°C, traditional organic thickeners fail. We recommend PFPE (Perfluoropolyether) grease thickened with PTFE. This combination is chemically inert, non-flammable, and can withstand continuous temperatures up to 260°C (and higher for specific grades) without carbonizing.
What is the difference between PFPE grease and standard high temperature grease?
Standard high temp greases (like Lithium Complex or Polyurea) use hydrocarbon or synthetic ester base oils that will eventually oxidize and burn off at extreme heat. PFPE grease uses a fluorinated synthetic oil that does not oxidize, burn, or react with aggressive chemicals, offering vastly superior longevity in extreme environments.
Can high temperature grease be used on electric motors?
Yes, but selection is critical. Polyurea grease is specifically recommended for high-temperature electric motor bearings because it is an ashless thickener. It provides excellent shear stability and does not leave metallic deposits that could affect motor performance or bearing life.
How often should high temperature grease be reapplied?
Relubrication intervals depend entirely on the operating temperature, speed, load, and environmental contamination. As a general rule, for every 15°C rise above 70°C, the grease life is halved. Upgrading to a synthetic high-temperature grease can significantly extend these intervals compared to mineral-based alternatives.
Can I customize packaging and labels?
Absolutely. As an OEM manufacturer, we specialize in custom packaging. We can supply grease in unbranded bulk, or fully packaged in tubes, sachets, or cartridges with your brand's custom labels, ready for retail or inclusion in your equipment maintenance kits.
Do you offer OEM and private label services?
Yes, OEM and private labeling are core to our business. We work with lubricant distributors, equipment manufacturers, and aftermarket brands globally to provide tailored grease formulations under their own branding, complete with technical documentation support.
